Bell, Andrews Pitch Adelphi Past Bentley, 4-1 and 5-1

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Senior lefty Leighann Bell (East Islip, N.Y.) pitched a five-hitter in the opener and freshman righty Katie Andrews (Dothan, Ala.) bettered that in the nightcap, finishing with a two-hitter, as Adelphi University swept Bentley University, 4-1 and 5-1, in Northeast-10 Conference softball Wednesday afternoon at Bentley.

Bell struck out seven and walked one while winning her 12th of the season, and Andrews fanned nine and walked five. The two combined to strand 17 base runners as Bentley was just 2-for-30 with runners on base, including 0-for-14 in the opener.

In game one, Adelphi claimed an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Senior third baseman Shay Craig (Boise, Idaho) tripled to center and after a walk, scored when junior first baseman Amanda Krier (Couer d'Alene, Idaho) got caught in a rundown attempting to steal.

An RBI single by Krier in the fourth made it a 2-0 game and the streaking Panthers (eight straight wins) added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Sophomore second baseman Heather Salerno (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in the first with a single and Craig followed with a sacrifice fly.

Bentley's only run of game one was scored in the last of the seventh. Freshman third baseman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) led off with a single (her second of the game), took second on a throwing error and came in on the Panthers' second error of the inning.

Andrews was staked to a 2-0 in the second inning of game two when sophomore shortstop Jeanine Leo (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a two-run homer to left, her seventh of the season. The Panthers (24-20, 16-8 NE-10) built on their lead with a run in the third and two more in the sixth.

Adelphi's nine hits included two apiece by Krier, who scored once, and senior designated player Maria Canino (Huntington, N.Y.).

Bentley scored its run in the third inning. Freshman center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree/ Braintree HS) was hit by a pitch, sacrificed to second and scored on a single to left by junior catcher Megan Blier (Wells, Maine/Wells HS).

The Falcons will finish their 2011 season this weekend with doubleheaders at Le Moyne College Saturday and at the College of Saint Rose Sunday.
