Wesche, Stonesifer Pitch New Haven to a Pair of 5-2 Wins over Bentley

WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Sophomore Alana Wesche (Oxford, Conn.) pitched a five-hitter in the opener and junior Micah Stonesifer (Wichita Falls, Texas) followed with a three-hitter in game two as the University of New Haven posted a pair of 5-2 wins over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference softball at the UNH Softball Field Saturday afternoon.

Game one started out on a positive note for Bentley with freshman designated player Chelsea Tamuk (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen HS) hitting her first career home run in the second inning and the Falcons making it 2-0 with an unearned run in the fourth. Freshman center fielder Jackie Gauthier (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) hit a two-out double down the left field line and later scored on an error.

New Haven got on the board with an unearned run in the fourth and claimed the lead with three runs in the fifth, capitalizing on a pair of Bentley errors.  All five Charger runs in the opener were unearned as the Falcons committed a season-high six errors.

In game two, New Haven (21-12, 11-7 NE-10) scored once in the second and added to its lead with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, with the latter two unearned. The fourth inning featured a two-run homer to right by junior right fielder Shannon Angehr (Levittown, N.Y.), her fourth of the season.

Both Bentley runs were scored in the top of the seventh. Freshman third baseman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) doubled to right, Gauthier was hit by a pitch and both advanced a base on a wild pitch. A throwing error allowed Sanborn to score and Gauthier came in on a ground out by junior right fielder Afton Dean (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical HS).

Bentley's eight hits in the doubleheader included two apiece by Sanborn, junior left fielder Meghan Carter (Hudson, Mass./Hudson HS) and junior catcher Megan Blier (Wells, Maine/Wells HS).

Bentley will remain in the Nutmeg State for a Sunday doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State (12 noon).
