CLERMONT, Fla. -- Bentley University softball coach Michele DeGregorio reached the 500 career win club Monday afternoon when her team defeated Nyack College, 3-0, on the strength of the second shutout in three days by junior pitcher Tara Fogarty (Chester, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic HS).

The win was the second of the day for the Falcons, who rallied for a 6-5 win over the University of Bridgeport earlier in the day.

The victory boosted DeGregorio's career record to 500-273 in 18 seasons. She's in her sixth year trying to build the Bentley program after a dozen years at her alma mater, Merrimack. Her resume includes a 1994 NCAA Division II national championship while at Merrimack.

Fogarty, who tossed a two-hitter against St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, yielded only a second-inning single. She didn't issue a walk and struck out seven.

She received the only run she would need in the fourth when junior center fielder Meghan Carter (Hudson, Mass./Hudson HS) led off with a single to center and eventually scored the game's first run on a double to center by freshman Kelly Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS).

In the fifth, a two-run double by sophomore second baseman Erica Thibodeau (Cohoes, N.Y./ Shaker HS) provided some insurance, extending the lead to three runs.

Carter and sophomore shortstop Stephanie Kasson (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt HS) each had two hits for the Falcons.

Fogarty also posted the win in the opener, pitching six innings of relief against Bridgeport. She struck out four, walked three and allowed three hits and two runs.

Down 3-1 after one and 4-2 after three, Bentley turned the game around with a three-run fourth. Thibodeau and Carter were again involved with Thibodeau doubling in a run and later scoring, and Carter driving in the go-ahead run.

After Bridgeport tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, Bentley answered with what proved to be the winning run in the sixth, with Thibodeau scoring after reaching on an error.

As was the case against Nyack, both Kasson and Carter had two hits.

Bentley plays just once on Tuesday, an 11:30 am encounter with Wilmington College (Del.).
