This Day in Bentley History - May 6, 2016: Sihvonen Becomes Northeast-10 Champion in Javelin

On this day in 2016, with a winning margin of nearly 15 feet, Bentley University sophomore Holt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial HS) turned in a winning effort in the men's javelin during day one of the Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 6, 2016 at American International College.

Already an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier and the school record holder in the event, Sihvonen posted a best throw of 198 feet, one inch to easily capture the championship. Southern Connecticut's Cy McIntosh was second with a distance of 183'5". It was the fifth straight meet in which Sihvonen finished first.

Also in the javelin, senior Joe Simonini (Revere/Revere HS) placed e ighth in a field of 19 (161'6") and freshman Anthony Giesing (Bradford, Vt./Oxbow HS) was 11th (145'4").

Day 1 concluded with the quartet of David Cooper (Woburn/Woburn HS)Tim Bolick (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS)Sean Nee (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) and Nik Haas (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey HS) giving Bentley a fourth-place finish in the men's 4x800 (7:43.46).

Bentley had success in the men's 10,000 meters with freshman Cody Murphy (Dunbarton, N.H./ Goffstown HS) leading the way with a sixth-place finish. Murphy covered the distance in 32:42.84, a personal best by more than 27 seconds. Junior Erik Alatalo (Wilmington/Wilmington HS) followed in eighth (33:21.81) and senior Sidney Field (Leverett/Amherst Reg. HS) set a PR (34:09.96, an improvement of 23 seconds) while placing ninth.

Also achieving a sixth for the Falcons was Haas is the 1500 meters, reaching the finish line in 3:57.90.

Freshman Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield HS) was the only Bentley woman to score Friday as she placed eighth among 23 competitors in the women's long jump, achieving a distance of 16'9.75".

Ninth-place finishes for the Bentley women were achieved by seniors Arianne Bourgault (Fitchburg/Fitchburg HS) in the 10,000 and Olyvia Leahy (New Bedford/New Bedford HS) in the 100 hurdles. Bourgault's 40:51.89 was a PR by nearly 100 seconds, and Leahy's 16.51 improved on her previous best by 0.18 seconds. Levy's performance elevated her into a tie for third on Bentley's all-time list and Bourgault moved to seventh in program history in the 10K.

In the 1500, sophomore Marianne Bartolotta (Wantagh, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) finished 14th of 33 in 4:57.10.

The Bentley men finished the day in fifth place, among ten teams, with 23 points.
