UConn Tops Bentley 5-2 in Falcons’ Fall Finale
STORRS, Conn. – Division I UConn took a 5-2 decision over Bentley University in the fall finale for the Falcons men's tennis team on Sunday afternoon.
Doubles counted for one point to the team that won a majority of the matches, which was the Huskies with a two to one advantage. Bentley's No. 1 team of seniors Brendan McCarthy (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and George Samander (Willemstad, Curacao) were winners for the Falcons, as they defeated Justin Warren and Jacob Appleton by a 6-4 score.
Bentley then won two matches in singles. Freshman Daniel Weitz (Roslyn, N.Y./Roslyn) defeated Hank Hill in the No. 3 match in three sets. After Hill won the first set 6-3, Weitz rallied and took the next two sets 6-1 and 11-9 to emerge with the victory.
Samander also won the No. 2 match after his opponent Appleton was forced to retire.
The Falcons end the fall season with a 3-1 record. They'll reconvene in the spring season, which opens with a match against MIT on Feb. 21.
