Bentley Rallies Past Assumption for 5-4 Victory in NE-10 Quarters

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Brendan McCarthy (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) won the deciding singles match 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to send No. 4 seed Bentley to a 5-4 victory over No. 5 seed Assumption in the Northeast-10 Men's Tennis Championship quarterfinals.

The Falcons overcame a 2-1 deficit from doubles play with wins in four of six singles matches to come away with the victory and advance to Thursday's semifinals.

With the match tied 4-4, McCarthy's No. 2 singles match against sophomore Marco Leung was the last match going and the decider. After they two split the first two sets, the third set was tied 5-5. McCarthy held serve and jumped ahead 6-5. He then broke Leung in the next game to win the set 7-5 and the match for the Falcons.

Singles wins by George Samander (Willemstad, Curacao/ISC) in the No. 3 match (6-1, 6-3), Chase Rosa (Hampton, N.H./Berwick) in the No. 4 match (6-1, 6-0) and Evan Chomka in the No. 6 match (6-0, 6-0) pushed Bentley to a 4-2 lead.

Needing to win just one more match, Assumption fought back however. Sophomore Jakob Zylak outlasted Daniel Camacho (Bogota, Columbia/CNG) in the No. 5 match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to make it 4-3. Sophomore Chris Waung then took the No. 1 match over Kamil Pilch (Wroclaw, Poland/IMG) 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to tie the match 4-4 and leave it up to the McCarthy-Leung duel.

Assumption's 2-1 lead in doubles came from wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. McCarthy and Samander combined to take the No. 2 match from Zylak and sophomore Casey Hodor, 8-1.

Bentley now advances to Thursday's semifinal where they will take on Merrimack.
