NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Bentley University senior Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS) turned in an outstanding effort to easily capture the gold medal in the three-meter diving Thursday afternoon during the first day of competition in the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Southern Connecticut State University.

Walsh, with a score of 381.20 points, won the event by 82.55 over Ryan Butler of The College of Saint Rose.

Bentley's only other top-six performance during the meet's first day was recorded by senior Joe Frantel (Canandaigua, N.Y./Marcus Whitman HS) in the 50 yard freestyle, with his time of 22.00 seconds good for sixth place. Sophomore Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) touched right after his teammate, placing seventh in 22.11.

Bentley, which was fifth in both relays (200 free, 400 medley), concluded the opening day with 163 points, good for third in a field of seven.  The Falcons trail defending champion Southern Connecticut State (288) and Saint Rose (224) on the score list.

The championships resume at 10 am Friday and run through Saturday evening.
