Mathews, Hellstern & Witty Earn Weekly Honors from Northeast-10

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University junior Abby Mathews (Chelmsford/Chelmsford HS) and a pair of Falcon freshmen, Danielle Hellstern (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) and Josh Witty (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos HS), have earned weekly recognition from the Northeast-10 Conference for their performance last Tuesday night against Bridgewater State University.

Mathews was cited as the Women's Diving Athlete of the Week, Hellstern was the selection as Women's Swimming Rookie of the Week, and Witty was the choice for Men's Swimming Rookie of the Week.  Mathews and Witty were both recognized for the second time, and Hellstern became the third member of this year's team to collect a NE-10 Women's Rookie of the Week award.

Mathews captured the three-meter diving with a score of 246.55, and also finished third, behind a pair of teammates, in the one-meter (188.70). Hellstern swam to a win in the 50 yard freestyle in 26.85 seconds and was a member of a Falcon 200 medley relay team that finished third (2:06.44). Their efforts helped Bentley improve to 8-1 as the Falcons nearly doubled the Bears, 185-93

In the men's 163-87 win over Bridgewater State, Witty won the 100 backstroke in 59.23 and also participated on two winning relay teams (400 free, 3:32.83, and 200 medley, 1:47.36).

Also recognized by the conference, with selection to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll, were sophomore Amy Shin (Lancaster/Nashoba Reg. HS) and senior Erik Stricker (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central HS).

Shin posted winning efforts in the two events she swam, the 100 freestyle (57.46) and the 100 individual medley (1:06.48). In his final dual meet as a collegian, Stricker won both the 500 freestyle and the 1000 free, with times of 5:14.57 and 10:56.72 respectively, and also was a part of Bentley's 200 medley relay team that was second in 1:47.78.

Bentley will compete in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships Thursday through Saturday at Southern Connecticut State.
