Sylvia Named NE-10 Swimmer of the Week; Walsh, Wilde & Cornelius Also Honored

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University sophomore Steve Sylvia (Weslerly, R.I./Westerly HS) has been named the Men's Swimmer of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference after his strong performance in dual meet victories against UMass-Dartmouth and St. Michael's College.

Three of his teammates also received weekly awards from the conference. Senior Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS) was selected as the NE-10 Men's Diving Athlete of the Week for the fourth time in as many weeks, freshman Paige Wilde (Naugatuck, Conn./Holy Cross HS) repeated as the NE-10 Women's Diving Athlete of the Week, and freshman Janco Cornelius (Brookfield, Conn./ Brookfield HS) was the choice for NE-10 Men's Rookie of the Week for the second straight week.

Sylvia finished first in the three individual events he swam and helped Bentley win two of three relays during the week. Against St. Michael's, he was victorious in both the 50 yard freestyle (22.56) and the 100 free (50.37), and anchored the Falcons' winning 400 free relay team, closing in 49.52 for a time of 3:23.32. In the UMass-Dartmouth meet, Sylvia was first in the 50 free (22.41), the anchor on a winning 400 free relay team (3:45.68) and was part of a 400 medley relay team that was second (3:56.90).

Walsh, the Men's Diver of the Week for the 13th time in his career, posted meet-best scores of 233.10 on the one-meter and 237.75 on the three-meter against St. Michael's, and was second in both diving events at UMass-Dartmouth, with scores of 239.50 (one meter) and 234.40 (three meter).

Wilde captured both the one-meter diving and the three-meter diving against UMass-Dartmouth, with scores of 218.15 and 213.05, respectively. Against St. Michael's, competing without opposition, she posted scores of 227.90 in the three-meter and 216.65 off the one-meter board.

Cornelius, in Bentley's win over UMass-Dartmouth, helped the Falcons capture the 400 medley relay (1:41.27) and finished first in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.73). He was part of Bentley's winning 200 medley relay team against St. Michael's (1:41.27), and also had a pair of third-place finishes (50 free, 23.49, and 100 breast, 1:04.62).

Two other Bentley swimmers, junior All-America Jessica Hodsdon (Brewer, Maine/Brewer HS) and Nadine Edwards (Danbury, Conn./Danbury HS), were selected for the conference's Weekly Honor Roll.

Hodsdon won three of the four individual events she swam during a pair of dual victories, and also participated on a winning relay. At UMass-Dartmouth, she was first in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.78) and second in the 200 free (2:04.87). In the St. Michael's meet, she touched first in both the 100 butterfly (1:00.18) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.72), and helped Bentley capture the 200 medley relay in 1:53.90.

Edwards, during the 2-0 week, won two of three individual events and was part of two winning relays. At UMass-Dartmouth, she captured the 1000 freestyle in 11:12.63, and against St. Michael's, she finished first in the 500 free (5:25.69) and was second in the 200 free (2:01.58). In addition, she also helped Bentley finish first in the 400 free relay in both meets, with times of 3:55.13 against UMass-Dartmouth and 3:59.66 against the Purple Knights.

Bentley's next meet is the Northeast-10 Invitational, which it will host on December 4.
