Sylvia Wins a Pair as Bentley Downs Babson, 130-99

WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) was victorious in a pair of races as the Bentley University men's swimming and diving team downed Babson College, 130-99, Wednesday night at the Dana Center pool.

Sylvia won the 50 yard freestyle by the narrowest of margins, one-hundredth of a second. His time of 23.07 was just slightly better than Edvard Arnet of Babson's time of 23.08.

His margin of victory in the 100 freestyle wasn't much more. His time of 51.19 barely bested Arnet again, who posted a time of 51.22.

Sylvia also swam the first leg in Bentley's victorious 200 freestyle relay team. Sylvia, along with sophomores Michael Simoneau (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) and George Go (Manila, Philippines) and junior Joseph Frantel (Canandaigua, N.Y./Marcus Whitman HS) combined to post a winning time of 1:31.10, .17 of a second better than Babson's second place time.

Go was also a winner in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.59, while senior Egen Ouellette (West Hartford, Conn./Conard HS) took first in the 100 butterfly in 56.47.

Go and Ouellette also teamed with Simoneau and freshman Peter Belanger (Andover/Andover) to touch first in the 400 medley relay in 3:49.94.

Winning in the diving events for Bentley were senior Jon Andrews (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) off the one-meter board (260.70) and junior Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS) off the three-meter (231.61).

The Falcons, who improved to 7-1 in dual meets, are back in action on Saturday afternoon at Keene State.
