West Haven, Conn. – Two goals in the 1st half were enough to see New Haven defeat Bentley 2-0 on the final day of the regular season. The Falcons though will enter the NE10 Playoffs and will play a quarterfinal match on Saturday.
New Haven's Tiago Vintem scored in the 5th minute with a header off a corner kick to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes before halftime, forward Sean Skeens gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead after a through ball by teammate Frantz Innocent Jr sent him down the left side of the box.
Despite the goals, Bentley had a big advantage in total shots at 21-12 and also had more shots on goal at 7-5, but Chargers goalie Stefano Lorusso came up with seven saves. Sophomore Ronan Fitzpatrick (Coventry, Conn./East Catholic) and Patrick McMahon (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) each had four shots for Bentley.
Bentley finished the regular season with a 6-6 mark in the NE10 for 18 points. They will play either Adelphi or Franklin Pierce in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Bentley claimed a 2-1 victory over Franklin Pierce back on Oct. 19.
