No. 2 Adelphi Tops Bentley 4-2 in Top of the Standings Clash

Garden City, N.Y. – No. 2 ranked Adelphi stayed unbeaten on the season with a 4-2 victory over Bentley on Wednesday in a matchup of the two teams at the top of the NE10 standings.

Senior forward Julian Stewart (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) had both of the Bentley goals, his 7th and 8th of the season, and 5th straight game with a goal scored.

The teams came into the game separated by just one point, with Adelphi in first with 19 points and Bentley tied for second with 18 points and riding a four match winning streak. But it was the Panthers who emerged with the win to temporarily at least extend their lead to four points.

The Panthers improved to 12-0-1 overall and 7-0-1 NE10, while the Falcons dropped to 8-4 overall and 6-2 NE10.

Adelphi jumped out to a 1-0 lead after 13 minutes as sophomore Paolo Marciano converted a penalty kick for his NE10 leading 11th goal of the season. They doubled the lead just over four minutes later when junior George Yusuff scored off a corner kick that was sent in by midfielder Stephen Megaloudis.

After a seven minute lull, the teams traded goals 32 seconds apart. Adelphi's Taylor Kaczynski scored with a shot inside the left post, but Stewart pulled one back for Bentley shortly after. A pass was sent into the box from the right wing that pinballed around before Stewart got a shot off from about 12 yards away for the goal to cut the deficit to 3-1.

A little over four minutes before halftime, Adelphi made it a 4-1 game with a goal by senior forward Aidan Keenan.

Stewart got Bentley to within 4-2 in the 65th minute with his second goal of the game and eight of the season. Adelphi failed to clear the ball after shots by Patrick McMahon (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) and Connor Mote (Lisle, Ill./Benet) were blocked and Stewart jumped on the rebound.

The Falcons will look to bounce back on Saturday when they visit Saint Rose. That match begins at 4:00 pm.
