Men’s Soccer Battles Back to Top Saint Michael’s in 2OT, 2-1

Colchester, Vt. – Senior Julian Stewart (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) scored with 2:22 left in overtime to push the Bentley men's soccer team past Saint Michael's 2-1 up in Vermont on Saturday.

The Falcons battled back from a 1-0 first half deficit to claim the victory in double overtime over the Purple Knights.

Bentley has now won three games in a row and six of seven. They improved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the NE10 for 15 points. They will finish the day in a tie for 2nd place in the standings with Franklin Pierce, both four points behind Adelphi.

Saint Michael's took the lead in the 40th minute on a goal by Matteo Bianchini and held on for the final five minutes of the half to lead 1-0 at the break.

Bentley pressed for the tying goal in the second half with a number of shots, and got the breakthrough off the foot of junior Connor Mote (Lisle, Ill./Benet) in the 69th minute. Mote scored off a free kick to the top right corner of the net for his team leading 6th goal of the season to tie the game 1-1.

Neither team was able to score the go-ahead goal in the final 21 minutes of regulation or the first 17 minutes of overtime, until Stewart scored the winner for Bentley with Adam Watkins (Clover, S.C./Clover) and Patrick McMahon (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) on the assist.

The goal came off a corner kick that McMahon took and was tipped across the line by Watkins, which allowed Stewart to get a header on it into the top left corner for the win.

The goal was Stewart's 5th of the season.

Falcons keeper Nick Maldarella (St. James, N.Y./St. John's) made 12 saves to earn the win in goal.

Bentley is now off for the next week, and will return to the field next Saturday when they host Franklin Pierce and to go for its 4th straight win.
