Bentley Rallies from Two Goals Down, But Falls to Caldwell in OT 4-3

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Bentley staged a 2nd half comeback from two goals down, but ultimately fell in overtime to Caldwell 4-3 on Saturday afternoon in the final match of the season opening kickoff classic.

A spurt by both teams of four goals in less than two minutes saw a 1-1 game turn into a 3-3 game. Caldwell scored the first goal in the 78th minute from forward Jakub Havlak with a left-footed strike into the corner of the net. Just 53 seconds later, Caldwell went up 3-1 on a Bentley own goal.

But just over a minute later, the game was tied as juniors Luc Batawi (Raleigh, N.C./Enloe) and James Zaepfel (Williamsville, N.Y./Canisius High) scored for Bentley, with the goals coming just 50 seconds apart. Zaepfel scored first after breaking in on goal clean on a breakaway, followed by Batawi scoring off a feed from freshman Diego Lombardi (Guatemala City, Guatemala).

It was the first career Bentley goals for both players.

The match settled down over the final 10 minutes of regulation, but both teams got a shot on net. Batawi saw a header go over the crossbar in the 87th minute, while Bentley goalie Harrison Rapant (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) stopped a shot by Caldwell midfielder Italo Cardoso in the 88th minute, and the proceedings headed to overtime 3-3.

However, Caldwell found the winning goal just 1:20 into overtime. Forward Tom Yorston scored it with a shot from just inside the top of the 18-yard box for the 4-3 victory.

In the first half, junior Sean Sullivan (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) scored for the Falcons in the 33rd minute to draw them level 1-1, after Caldwell opened the scoring in the 5th minute.

Bentley falls to 0-2 on the season, while Caldwell split its two matches at the Kickoff Classic and is 1-1 on the young season.
