Hoffman’s OT Goal Gives Bentley 1-0 Win over Adelphi

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior midfielder Nick Hoffman (East Brookfield, Mass./Quabbin) scored in the 99th minute to give the Bentley men's soccer team a 1-0 overtime win over Adelphi on Saturday to keep its Northeast-10 playoff hopes alive.

The Falcons improve to 4-6-1 in the NE-10 for 13 points, while the Panthers drop to 7-4 in conference matches. They trail AIC by two points for the eighth and final NE-10 playoff spot, though Bentley will have a match in-hand after the Yellow Jackets play later this afternoon against Merrimack.

The buildup to the goal saw forward Scott Levy (Canton, Mass./Canton) dribble into the box and play a back heel pass to freshman Evan Hassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury). Hassett let a shot rip from 10 yards that was saved by Adelphi keeper Ahmad Salamah. The rebound though popped to Hoffman in front of the net, who didn't miss to send the Falcons to a key victory.

Junior keeper Jack Blatchford (Douglas, Mass./Douglas) made eight saves on the day to earn the win, none bigger than his first of the day in the second minute. Midfielder Juan Aguiar was played into the box and had a point-blank shot on net, only for Blatchford to come up with a big save.

Bentley's best two chances to score in regulation came within minutes of each other. In the 81st minute, a shot by Levy to the far post was just tipped away by Salamah. Then off the ensuing corner kick, midfielder Chris Harkins (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) put a shot on net that beat Salamah, but was only kept out of the net by an Adelphi defender stationed on the post.

The Falcons improve their record in overtime games to 2-1-1 this season. Hoffman scored the goal in the other overtime victory against AIC on Oct. 11.

Bentley's playoff push continues with the final two matches of the regular season next week. First up is a road match at Saint Anselm on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
