Three Goal First Half Propels Southern Conn Past Bentley

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A three-goal first half by Southern Connecticut propelled the Owls to a 4-2 victory over the Bentley men's soccer team Saturday night in the Northeast-10 opener for both teams.

Southern (3-0, 1-0 NE-10) raced out to a 2-0 lead after 14 minutes on goals by defenseman Mads  Larsen in the 11th minute and forward Daquan King in the 14th minute.

The Owls pushed their lead to 3-0 in the 42nd minute on a goal by midfielder Ignacio Navarro. That was the first of three goals scored in the span of less than four minutes, with Bentley getting the next two.

Junior Nicolas Ucros (Guatemala City, Guatemala) made it 3-1 in the 43rd minute after scoring on a direct free kick from 25 yards out. Then with just 10 seconds left before halftime, freshman Evan Hassett (Glastonbury, Conn.) made it a 3-2 game with his first career goal, beating keeper Noah Veronier with a shot from the middle of the penalty box.

However that's the last time Bentley would score, and a match that featured five goals in the first half turned defensive in the second. Southern scored the all-important next goal from defenseman Jonas Folstad, and it came in the 88th minute, giving the Falcons little time to mount a further comeback.

Bentley (1-3, 0-1 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when they host NE-10 rival Merrimack for a 3:30 pm match.
