Men's Soccer Beaten by NYIT 1-0 on Last Minute Goal

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Sophomore Alberto Ruiz scored the match's only goal in the 88th minute as New York Tech snatched victory late against Bentley University in non-conference men's soccer Saturday afternoon.

Bentley was out shot by a wide margin all afternoon, the final tally was 21-4 for Tech, but the Falcons defense and junior goalie Nick Gagnon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) held firm until Ruiz's goal with just over two minutes left in regulation. The goal came off a rebound from a shot by senior Vinny Caccavale.

The Falcons had two chances in the waning moments to find the equalizer. A corner kick by freshman Jose Tirado (Lima, Peru/Colegio Franklin Delano Roosevelt) went unanswered, and a shot by sophomore Stephen Silva (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) with nine seconds left on the clock was saved by Tech goalie Liam Waddy.

Gagnon was solid in net for the second straight match and made four saves.

Tech is now 1-0 after winning its season-opener, while the Falcons go to 1-1 after splitting their season-opening trip to New York. Bentley's next match is on Sept. 14 at home against Southern Connecticut.
