New Haven Stuns Bentley with Late Comeback in 4-4 Tie

WALTHAM, Mass. – New Haven stunned Bentley with three goals in a span of four minutes late in the second half to erase a three-goal deficit and eventually earn a 4-4 tie with the Falcons in a wild Northeast-10 men's soccer match Saturday afternoon.

Two first half goals from senior Brennan DaCosta (San Diego, Calif./Westview), plus another first half goal from Michael Kahn (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) and a 65th minute goal from freshman Scott Levy (Canton, Mass./Canton) had given the Falcons a seemingly comfortable 4-1 lead.

But a goal in the 80th minute from New Haven's Andres Torres off a corner kick opened the floodgates and the Chargers tied the match in no time.

Senior Joseph D'Antonio cut the lead to 4-3 in the 82nd minute, scoring from close range after teammate Dave Ljungquist sent a wide open cross in from the right wing. On New Haven's next attack they were awarded a penalty kick after a Bentley handball in the penalty area, and D'Antonio converted to stunningly tie the match at four in the 84th minute.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, they weren't able to recreate last week's overtime heroics against Assumption and the match ended 4-4.

Bentley goes to 4-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the NE-10 with the tie, and the Chargers go to 3-5-1 and 1-4-1.

DaCosta gave Bentley the best possible start to this match with a goal just 36 seconds in. Senior captain Weston Zeiner (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) fought off his marker to dribble the ball into the box, then fed a centering pass to DaCosta who smashed home his shot from five yards.

The lead however, did not last long as the Chargers equalized in the third minute on sophomore Tim Hines' first goal of the season. Midfielder Clancy Purcell sent a cross into the box from the left wing that eluded the keeper and allowed Hines a wide open shot for the goal.

But the Falcons seized the lead back in the 17th minute on Kahn's goal. Kahn, the hero of last Saturday's overtime win over Assumption, took Stephen Silva's (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) cross and fired a shot in from the edge of the six-yard box for a 2-1 Bentley lead.

DaCosta added his second of the half in the 33rd minute to increase the Falcons' lead to 3-1. Junior Justin Cirasola (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) fed DaCosta a through ball at the top of the penalty area while DaCosta was able to stay onside to receive the pass. DaCosta then had plenty of space to get off a low shot that beat Chargers keeper Anastasios Petridis to the left. The goals brought DaCosta's tally to a team-high five on the season.

Levy seemingly put the Falcons well on their way to victory with his first career goal in the 65th minute, with DaCosta on the assist, but that was not the case.
