Great Comeback by Bentley Falls Just Short in 12-11 OT Defeat to No. 8 Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Bentley men's lacrosse team rallied from 7-3 down at halftime to force overtime at No. 8 ranked Mercy, but the Mavericks scored first in the extra session to pull out the win.

Bentley outscored Mercy 8-4 in the second half, including 4-1 in the 4th quarter, to force overtime with the game tied 11-11. However, Mercy's Brady Kearnan scored 36 seconds into OT to give his team the win.

Bentley's Connor Baughan (Foxborough, Mass./Portsmouth Abbey) tied the game 11-11 with a goal with 1:20 remaining to complete the comeback.

Mercy won the ensuing face-off and drained about a minute off the clock, before Bentley forced a turnover behind the Mavericks' cage. The clear attempt, however, was not successful and Mercy got possession back, only for their final shot of regulation to be saved by Falcons goalie Mike Haggan (Braintree, Mass./BC High) to send the game to OT.

Mercy won the opening face-off of overtime and quickly called a timeout to setup a play, which resulted in Kearnan scoring to give them the victory.

Bentley began the 4th quarter trailing 10-7, but quickly erased the deficit with three goals in the opening three-plus minutes. Sophomore Ben Baldasaro (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) scored a man-up goal 22 seconds into the quarter, followed by a goal by senior Michael Fricke (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor) at 13:33. Senior Matt Brooks (Brunswick, Maine/Phillips Exeter) had the assists on both goals.

With the deficit just 10-9, senior Walker Gautier (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) tied it for the Falcons with a goal 12:22.

Neither team scored again until Mercy's Robert LoRicco scored with 4:27 to put them up 11-10. Baughan then tied it for Bentley with 1:20 remaining.

Trailing 7-3 at halftime, Bentley roared out of the gates and began the second half on a 3-0 run. Baldasaro scored a man-up goal, and goals also came from Fricke and freshman Eric Makhatadze (Clifton Park, N.Y.), to make the score 7-6 for Mercy.

The Mavericks then went on a brief 3-0 run, but Bentley closed the quarter with a goal by Gautier to trail 10-7 going into the fourth quarter.

The Falcons will now be off until Saturday, when they next visit NE10 rival Saint Rose on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
