Astarita, Haggan Lead Bentley Past Franklin Pierce, 10-7

Rindge, N.H. – Senior Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) scored four goals to surpass 100 points for his career, and goalie Mike Haggan (Braintree, Mass./BC High) made 15 saves to lead the Bentley men's lacrosse team to a 10-7 road victory over Franklin Pierce on Saturday.

Bentley led 6-1 at halftime and 10-4 after three quarters on its way to the win, which improved its records to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the NE10. The Ravens fell to 4-2 and 2-2.

Franklin Pierce scored the game's first goal, 4:37 into the first quarter from Domenic St Laurent, but that was its final goal of the half.

It took a while for Bentley to dent the scoreboard, but once they did they closed the 1st quarter with a flurry. Joey Tesoriero (Huntington Station, N.Y./Half Hollow East) scored at the 5:22 mark, and just 40 seconds later Astarita put Bentley in front 2-1. Senior Scott Carvalho (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) scored unassisted with 44 seconds left in the quarter.

Early in the 2nd quarter an FPU penalty for slashing gave Bentley a one minute man-up opportunity, and they took advantage as Sam Hurley (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) scored off an assist from Kris Campbell (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) at 12:45. Astarita's 2nd goal of the game, and 100th career point, at the 7:25 mark gave Bentley a 6-1 lead.

Franklin Pierce scored the first two goals of the 3rd quarter to cut its deficit to 6-3, but Bentley didn't let them get any closer thanks to a 4-0 run. The run started with a goal by Astarita at 11:06, and the run also saw goals by Tesoriero, Astarita for his 4th of the day, and Michael Fricke's (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor) 2nd of the day at 6:02 to give Bentley a 10-3 lead.

Though Fricke's goal was Bentley's last of the day, they held the lead over the final 21 minutes to secure the victory.

Haggan made 11 of his 15 saves in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to earn the win in the cage, while sophomore Connor Baughan (Foxborough, Mass./Portsmouth Abbey) led Bentley with three ground balls.

The Falcons next return home to face Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday night.
