Bentley Rallies Late But Falls in OT at SNHU 13-12

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Bentley erased a five goal deficit in the 4th quarter at Southern New Hampshire Wednesday night to force overtime, but the Penmen scored the winning goal in the extra session to come away with a dramatic 13-12 victory in a Northeast-10 matchup.

The Falcons were looking at a 12-7 deficit with 12:56 left in the final quarter after a man-up goal by Southern's Daniel Trainor. But Bentley reeled off five unanswered goals, four of them coming in man-up situations, to force overtime for the second straight game. Freshman Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H/Bishop Guertin) scored the tying goal with just seven seconds left for Bentley, but Southern's Cameron Joyce won it for the hosts 33 seconds into overtime.

Sophomore Joe DiRaimo (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn) got the run started with an unassisted man-up goal at the 11:37 mark. Just over five minutes later, DiRaimo struck again in a man-up situation, this time assisted by Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey), which cut the deficit to 12-9 with 6:17 to play.

About four minutes ticked off the clock with Bentley still trailing by three, until they scored three times in the final 2:29 to force OT. Brigham scored man-up with DiRaimo assisting, followed by an even strength goal by freshman Sam Hurley (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) with 1:50 to play to make it a 12-11 game.

Bentley's Max Adler (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./NMH) then won the ensuing face-off, and after a shot by Brigham went wide, Southern was whistled for a one-minute slashing penalty with 55 seconds remaining. After a shot by John Wheeler (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) went wide, Bentley regained possession and called timeout to set up the final play, which resulted in Astarita's goal with 7 seconds remaining, with Wheeler getting the assist.

In overtime, Southern won the opening face-off and called timeout, after which saw Joyce score the winning goal on the second shot of OT.

The defeat snaps Bentley's three game winning streak and drops its records to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the NE-10. They're back in action Saturday at Saint Michael's.
