WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Alex Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) scored 1:39 into overtime to give the Bentley men's lacrosse team a 10-9 win over Assumption to improve to 2-0 in Northeast-10 play.
Astarita scored on a low shot as he was being hit, after each team turned the ball over once to start overtime. The goal was assisted by John Wheeler (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough), his 3rd of the day.
Bentley led 6-5 heading into the 4th quarter after each team scored twice, but the 4th quarter saw the teams alternate the seven goals scored. Assumption got the last goal of regulation, scored by Dan Matisoff with 12 seconds left to tie the game at nine and to force overtime.
In the first half, Assumption jumped out to a 3-1 lead after a man-up goal by Aidan Murphy with 8:59 left in the 2nd quarter. But Bentley finished the quarter on a 3-0 run to lead 4-3 at halftime. The goals came from Wheeler, Matt Sanford (Stratham, N.H./Bow) and Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) in a man-up situation.
Now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the NE-10, Bentley is back in action on Wednesday night at Southern New Hampshire.
