Bentley Uses 10-0 Run to Cruise Past UDC 17-3

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Bentley men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season in a big way on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the University of the District of Columbia 17-3 in a non-conference game. Sophomore attack John Wheeler (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) had four goals.

In the first ever meeting between the two programs, the Falcons had a 10-0 run that started at the midway point of the second quarter and extended all the way to the final seconds of the third frame. It turned what was a slim 3-2 Falcons lead into a 13-2 advantage.

Wheeler scored his first two goals in the second quarter, including one in a man-up situation, followed by another man-up goal by midfielder Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth-Abbey), one of his three goals on the afternoon. After UDC got a goal back from midfielder Russel Lloyd at the 9:34 mark of the second quarter to make it a 3-2 game, junior Mike Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) scored for Bentley at the 6:26 mark to start the 10-0 run.

Brigham opened the scoring in third quarter, and a goal by senior Bobby Hinds (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) at the 9:22 point started a stretch of five Bentley goals in less than three minutes. During the 9-1 third quarter, Wheeler, Brigham and Matt Dente (Reading, Mass./Reading) each had two goals, and Hinds, Cutler Dimond (Marblehead, Mass./Tabor Academy) and freshman Matt Sanford (Stratham, N.H./Bow) all had one.

Bentley outscored the Firebirds 4-0 in the fourth quarter. Sanford assisted on the final two goals to give him three for the afternoon.

Now 1-1 on the season, Bentley will play its Northeast-10 opener on Friday at Franklin Pierce for a 5:00 pm start.
