Big Offensive Day Leads Bentley Past Saint Michael's 12-6
COLCHESTER, Vt. – Attackers Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) and Cutler Dimond (Marblehead, Mass./Tabor Academy) led the offensive charge as the Bentley men's lacrosse team defeated Saint Michael's 12-6 on Tuesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 matchup for its third straight victory.
Brigham matched his career-high with four goals and Dimond added three. Both added one assist to their big offensive days. Bentley also went 2-5 in man-up situations, with the goals coming from freshman John Wheeler (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and junior Bobby Hinds (West Hartford, Conn./Conard).
Reigning NE-10 Goalie of the Week Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) made 14 saves as Bentley improves to 4-1 in the NE-10 and 4-3 overall.
The Falcons led 2-1 after the first quarter on goals by Brigham and Dimond. But they surged ahead in the second quarter, shutting out the Purple Knights 3-0. Wheeler scored a man-up goal, followed by Brigham's second of the day in the first 46 seconds of the quarter. Senior Nicolas Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) was also on target in the second quarter.
With Bentley leading 5-1 at halftime, Saint Michael's crept closer in the third quarter by scoring three of the first four goals. They made it a 6-4 game at the 10:00 mark on a goal by senior Evan Antolino.
But Bentley took command as Hinds netted his man-up goal just 30 seconds later, and just 14 seconds after that, Brigham found the back of the net again to give them an 8-4 lead. Antolino scored again for Saint Michael's at the 6:24 mark, but Bentley was quick to respond again as Brigham scored off a face-off win by Joey Lefebvre (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) just nine seconds later.
Junior Brendan Murphy (Wilmington, Mass./Middlesex School) closed the third quarter with a goal as Bentley led 10-5 going into the fourth, a lead they would not relinquish.
The Falcons will go for their fourth straight win on Saturday when they visit Saint Rose at 1:00 pm.
