Slow Start Dooms No. 9 Bentley in 9-6 Loss to No. 10 Adelphi
WALTHAM, Mass. – 10th-ranked Adelphi led 4-0 after the 1st quarter which was too much for 9th-ranked Bentley to overcome as the Panthers took a 9-6 victory over the men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 play.
The Falcons outscored Adelphi 6-5 the rest of the game and had the advantage in most of the statistical categories, including a 37-24 advantage in shots, but Panthers goalie Eric Jansen made 17 saves.
Junior Kieran Riegel inflicted most of the damage in the first quarter with a hat trick, scoring twice in the first 4:23 and again with 2:03 remaining.
Junior midfielder James Gilloran (Guilford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) got one back for the Falcons at the 8:54 mark of the second, but junior attack Joe Vitale cancelled that out for Adelphi with 5:21 left before the half.
Only two goals were scored again in the third quarter with each team getting one. Sophomore Dan Keefer (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) found the back of the net for Bentley and sophomore Michael Rossi did the same for Adelphi.
Leading 6-2 heading into the fourth quarter, Adelphi scored the period's first two goals to take an 8-2 lead, before Bentley scored four of the game's last five goals. Three of those were with a man-advantage, with two coming from junior Brendan Grant (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and the other from senior Jared Kinch (Cohasset, Mass./BC High).
The win is the fifth of the season for the Panthers, who are now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the NE-10. Bentley drops to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Falcons return to the field on Wednesday night at Assumption.
