RIT Defeats Bentley 5-1 in Series Finale

Rochester, N.Y. – RIT defeated the Bentley hockey team 5-1 on Saturday night at the Polisseni Center to claim all six points on the weekend.

Sophomore forward Jakov Novak (Windsor, Ontario) notched his 16th goal of the season for the Falcons. RIT had four different goal scorers, led by freshman Elijah Gonsalves with two goals.

The teams traded goals in the early going. RIT scored on the game's first shot as junior Nick Bruce tipped in a shot that came from defenseman Dan Willet 20 seconds into the game.

The Falcons though responded just over three minutes later, when Novak lit the lamp for the 16th time this season. A long pass by defenseman Connor Brassard (Fitchburg, Mass.) ahead of the RIT defenseman gave Novak a breakaway on goal. Novak was able to fight off RIT's Adam Brubacher, who was called for hooking on the play, to backhand a shot past RIT goalie Logan Drackett. Senior Brett Orr (Elkhorn, Manitoba) also had an assist on the goal, which came at the 3:45 mark.

The first period ended 1-1 and with Bentley a 12-7 edge in shots.

The Tigers though scored twice in the first 3:01 of the 2nd period to take the lead. Freshman Caleb Moretz first scored at 1:57, after Brubacher skated around the net and flung the puck to Moretz in the slot out in front.

Gonsalves then netted a power play goal at 3:01 after he was set up by fellow freshman Moretz.

RIT tacked on a goal by senior Shawn Cameron at 6:18 of the 3rd period, and Gonsalves finished the scoring with an empty net goal with 28 seconds left.

Bentley (11-13-2 AHA) is off next weekend and will return to the ice on Feb. 28-29 to close out the regular season with a home and home series against Holy Cross.
