Desbiens Scores Hat Trick in 4-1 Bentley Win over Army West Point

Waltham, Mass. – Senior Jonathan Desbiens (Montreal, Quebec) scored a hat trick and senior Jake Kauppila (Gurnee, Ill.) had two assists to lead Bentley University to a 4-1 victory over Army West Point on Friday night at Bentley Arena, the team's 5th straight win.

The hat trick was Desbiens' 3rd of his career, and the first hat trick by a Bentley player in nearly two years to the day. The last one was by Kyle Schmidt on Feb. 3, 2018.

Desbiens scored twice less than three minutes apart early in the 1st period to give Bentley a 2-0 lead. His first goal came just 1:47 into the game. Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) played a puck off the boards in the defensive zone, and Kauppila came up with it two create a two-on-one break with Desbiens. Kauppila timed his pass perfectly and Desbiens lifted his shot over Penta for the game's first goal.

Desbiens scored again, his 10th of the season, at the 4:28 mark. Defenseman Luke Orysiuk (Edmonton, Alberta) had a shot on goal that Penta made a pad save on, but Desbiens swooped in for the rebound and beat Penta to the glove side to make it 2-0 for Bentley.

Kauppila set up Bentley's 3rd goal, scored by senior Matt Riggleman (Milford, Mich.) for a 3-0 lead at 13:35 of the 2nd period. Will Garin (Mound, Minn.) fed Kauppila pass into the offensive zone to create a two-on-one with Kauppila and Riggleman. Kauppila again timed his pass perfectly, and Riggleman did the rest for his 2nd goal of the season.

Desbiens then completed his hat trick at 17:48 of the 2nd period to give Bentley a 4-0 lead. Right winger Michael Zuffante (Bloomingdale, Ill.) fed him a pass on the point, and the shot on net by Desbiens frisbeed past Penta for the goal, his 11th of the year.

Army pulled a goal back 29 seconds after Desbiens goal to make it a 4-1 game after left wing Brett Abdelnour scored after a scramble in front of the net.

Neither team scored in the 3rd period, as Bentley secured the 4-1 victory. The win improved the team's record to 13-13-3 overall and 11-11-2 in Atlantic Hockey.

Sophomore goalie Fraser Kirk (Burlington, Ontario) made 23 saves to earn his 8th win of the season.

Bentley will go for a 6th straight win on Saturday night when they host Arizona State at the Arena. Puck drop is 7:05 pm.
