Desbiens Scores in OT To Give Bentley 3-2 Win over Niagara

Waltham, Mass. – Senior Jonathan Desbiens (Montreal, Quebec) scored 1:09 into overtime to give the Bentley hockey team a 3-2 victory over Niagara on Friday night at Bentley Arena for its 3rd straight win.

With Bentley on a power play that had carried over from regulation, Jakov Novak (Windsor, Ontario) and Matt Gosiewski (Wilton, Conn.) worked the puck down low to Desbiens on the far post of Niagara goalie Chad Veltri. Desbiens then fired a quick shot past Veltri to give Bentley the win and for his 8th goal of the season.

The win improved the Falcons' record to 9-11-3 in Atlantic Hockey for 29 points.

The Falcons started fast on this night, as they scored on the first shift and their second shot of the game. Defenseman Brett Orr (Elkhorn, Manitboa) won the puck along the boards and passed it over to freshman Lucas Vanroboys (Thamesville, Ontario) in the slot. Vanroboys got off a shot that Niagara goalie Chad Veltri made a pad save on, but Dylan Pitera (Culver, Indiana) was there on the doorstep to stuff home the rebound.

Bentley still led 1-0 at the end of the first period, but 4:52 into the 2nd the Purple Eagles tied it up on a goal by freshman center Ryan Naumovski.

Just over two minutes later, though went back in front on Jakov Novak's (Windsor, Ontario) 15th goal of the year. Novak had two quick shots from close range saved by Veltri. But on the rebound of the second shot, Luke Santerno (Smithers, B.C.) grabbed the rebound and fed a behind the back pass to Novak, who shot past the out of position Veltri to give Bentley a 2-1 lead.

Later in the period, Niagara tied the game back up at 2-2 when they scored with a power play goal, after right wing Jack Billings scored off a scramble in front of the net.

The 2nd period ended 2-2 and neither team scored in the 3rd period to send the game to overtime knotted at two. Bentley outshot Niagara 10-3 in the 3rd frame, but Veltri came up with all 10 stops.

Niagara was called for boarding with 20 seconds left in the 3rd period, and the Bentley power play carried over into overtime which led to Desbiens' winner.

Sophomore goalie Fraser Kirk (Burlington, Ontario) made 21 saves to earn the win.
