WATERTOWN, Mass. – Right winger Austin McIllmurray scored two goals to help visiting Sacred Heart upend the Bentley hockey team 4-1 on Tuesday night. Freshman center Luke Santerno (Smithers, B.C.) had the goal for Bentley.
The first 30-plus minutes of action were scoreless, but the Pioneers went ahead with two goals in a span of 34 seconds to take a 2-0 lead. Both of the goals came right off of face-off wins in the offensive zone that led to the goal. Just after the midway point of the 2nd period, SHU's Jordan Kaplan scored off a face-off win from Kory Kennedy. McIImurray then scored off a face-off win from Matt Tugnutt for the second goal.
Santerno scored a power play goal 1:05 into the 3rd period to help Bentley get back into it at 3-1, but that is as close as they could get.
McIllmurray's second goal of the night with 3:31 left in the 3rd period helped see the Pioneers through to the victory.
Bentley had a 26-23 edge in shots, but SHU goalie Brett Magnus came up with 25 saves.
The Falcons dropped to 4-7-3 in Atlantic Hockey games with the defeat. They'll look to bounce back this coming weekend when they travel to Army West Point.
