Callin’s Two Goals Helps Bentley Top Niagara 3-1

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Freshman Drew Callin (Middleton, Wisc./Janesville) scored two goals, and Max French (West Kelowna, B.C./West Kelowna) scored just 30 seconds into the game, as Bentley defeated Niagara 3-1 Saturday night to gain a split of the weekend series.

Callin scored goals in the 2nd and 3rd periods, with his goal in the final period coming just 40 seconds in. Senior goalie Gabe Antoni (Lansdale, Pa./Springfield) made 23 saves, and French got it all started with his quick goal.

French scored on the game's first shot for his 3rd goal of the series, after scoring twice in Friday night's game, and his 10th of the season. After taking a pass from Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, B.C./Nanaimo), he skated in and ripped a shot from the right face-off circle past the glove of Niagara goalie Joe O'Brien.

Bentley took control in the 2nd period with a key sequence that began with a Niagara goal getting waved off after a review about seven minutes into the period. The Falcons then had to go on the penalty kill at 7:43 after a boarding penalty, but successfully killed it off.

A little under two minutes after the successful penalty kill, Callin found the back of the net at 11:21 to give Bentley a 2-0 lead, assisted by Jake Ahlgren (Fergus Falls, Minn./Wenatchee) and defenseman Matt Blomquist (Blaine, Minn./Coulee Region).

Callin made it 3-0 for Bentley just 40 seconds into the 3rd period. Gladiuk got the goal started by feeding Callin a pass from the right corner as Callin entered the offensive zone. He then skated in on net, deked around O'Brien and jammed the puck home for his 2nd of the night.

Antoni had his bid for a 2nd shutout in three games denied late as Niagara scored with an extra-attacker on the ice with 59 seconds left. Still, he picks up his 4th win of the season.

The Falcons improve to 5-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey games with the win. They'll close out the first half of the season next weekend with a series at home against Holy Cross.
