Canisius Upends Bentley, 2-0

BUFFALO, New York -- Freshman Jayson Argue (Swan River, Manitoba/Nanaimo) made 31 saves, but Canisius College scored once in the first period and once in the third period to take a 2-0 victory over the Bentley ice hockey team at the HarborCenter on Saturday night.

Mitch McCrank scored scored the Griffs' first goal at the 9:17 mark of the first period when teammate Cody Freeman deflected the puck to the left side face-off circle. McCrank shot the puck on a one-timer that beat the goalie stick side to give Canisius a 1-0 lead.

It would also stand as the only even-strength goal allowed by the Bentley defense; the second Canisius goal came with under five minutes left in the game on a power play. Shane Conacher scored on a wrist shot from the face-off circle to make the score 2-0 late.

Despite the power play goal allowed, Bentley stayed out of the penalty box for the majority of the contest. The two teams played a clean first period with only one penalty against Canisius in the second. The first Bentley penalty came with 5:24 left in the third period, and they only committed two on the night.

The Falcons' best chances to score came in the third period when Canisius sent players to the box, but the power play failed to convert on each of its two attempts. Bentley finished with 18 shots on goal compared to the Griffins' 33.

Argue's 31 saves combined with Friday to give him 59 stops on the weekend. His save percentage now stands at .944, tied for second best in the nation, while his 1.75 goals against average is seventh best.

The loss ends a string of six games in a row on the road for the Falcons dating back to last semester. After going 2-2-2 over the span, they return home to Ryan Arena on Friday for the first time since December 6th, when they host Atlantic Hockey rival RIT for two games. Game times for both Friday and Saturday are slated for 7:05 PM.
