Late Goals Lift No. 20 Robert Morris Past Bentley

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Robert Morris scored three times in the final 5:27 of the third period, turning what was a scoreless game into a 3-0 victory for the 20th-ranked Colonials. The same two teams will conclude their Atlantic Hockey series tomorrow night.

A matchup between the top two scoring offenses in Atlantic Hockey was a defensive struggle for the first 54-plus minutes as goalies Jayson Argue (Swan River, Manitoba/Nanaimo) for Bentley and Robert Morris' Dalton Izyk battled in a scoreless draw.

The Colonials had a 16-10 advantage in shots after the first period, but Bentley started to narrow the gap and gained and a foothold in the second frame, cutting the shots deficit to 14-12 in that period. After Robert Morris committed a penalty late in the second to give Bentley a power play, Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, B.C./Nanaimo) nearly put the Falcons in front before the period expired, only to be denied by a great save by Izyk.

Gladiuk nearly put Bentley in front again about eight minutes into the third period after he was left alone in front of the net, but Izyk was up to the task again.

The Colonials finally got the game's first goal with just 5:27 remaining on a goal by junior Brandon Denham, who took a pass from forward Greg Gibson after Gibson worked to gain control of a loose puck.

A little over three minutes later after Bentley took an untimely penalty, Robert Morris took advantage with a power play goal from David Friedmann with a shot right in front of Argue after the puck squirted loose. That made it 2-0 with 2:18 to play.

Bentley pulled Argue with 1:47 remaining in hopes of making up the two goal deficit, but forward Zac Lynch clinched it for the Colonials with an empty-net goal with 57 ticks remaining on the clock.

Robert Morris improves to 10-2-3 in Atlantic Hockey play with the victory, while the Falcons' conference record drops to 7-5-2.
