TROY, N.Y. – Bentley scored three special teams goals in defeating Rensselaer 4-0 Saturday night to sweep the weekend series from the Engineers. Four different players scored the Falcons' goals, and senior goalie Blake Dougherty (East Amherst, N.Y./Bay State Breakers) earned his first career shutout with 19 saves.

Bentley scored two power play goals, one in the first and one in the second period, and a shorthanded goal in the first. Freshman Ryan McMurphy (Broken Arrow, Okla./Tri City Storm) and defenseman Matt Maher (Avon, Conn./Westside) had the power play goals, and freshman Andrew McDonald (New Brighton, Minn./Fargo Force) had the shorthanded goal.

McMurphy's first career goal at 15:15 of the first period staked the Falcons to a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later with Bentley down a man another freshman, McDonald, netted his first career goal from Derek Bacon (Calgary, Alberta/Okotoks Oilers) to make it 2-0.

Bentley's third goal by senior Alex Kubiak (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Steel) wasn't scored by special teams, but it came just seconds after killing off a RPI power play. After Tyler Deresky (Flemington, N.J./Amarillo) was released from the box he streaked down the ice and poked the puck away from RPI goalie Scott Diebold. Deresky then fed Kubiak who scored on a wrap-around past Diebold to make it 3-0 at 14:17 of the second.

Maher's power play goal at 18:58 of the second extended the lead to 4-0. A shot by Bacon in front of the net was blocked by the RPI defense. But Maher pounced on the rebound and lifted a shot past Diebold for Bentley's second power play tally of the night. That was Bacon's third assist of the evening.

Dougherty meanwhile kept the door shut for the shutout. He made eight saves in both the first and third periods.

The Falcons improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Engineers drop to 1-5. Bentley next opens a two-game series at Penn State from the Big Ten on Thursday. Face off for the series opener is 7:00 pm
