Komm Makes 33 Saves But Bentley Edged By Maine 2-1

ORONO, Maine – Senior goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) made 33 saves and Bentley played a strong game, but Maine held on for a 2-1 win Saturday night in front of over 4,500 at Alfond Arena.

In Bentley's first visit to Maine since a win there five seasons ago, the game was tied 1-1 after one period, with sophomore Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, B.C./Nanaimo Clippers) scoring for Bentley. Junior Stu Higgins scored his second goal of the game for Maine in the second period, and that was enough to give the Black Bears the narrow win.

The Falcons were hurt by going 0-7 on the power play with two of those opportunities being 5-on-3 chances. Bentley forced Maine into a 0-8 night on the power play.

Higgins opened the scoring for Maine just 2:21 into the first period. But just over 1:30 later Gladiuk found the back of the net with a wrist shot that went just under the cross bar to tie it up at one. Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins) and Max French (West Kelowna, B.C./West Kelowna Warriors).

Komm was at his best in the first period with 19 saves.

Bentley turned around the shots total in the second period, outshooting Maine 15-6, but it was the Black Bears that got the period's only goal with Higgins scoring for a second time, finishing off a 3-on-2 break down the ice.

It was in the second period that Bentley had two 5-on-3 power play opportunities, one for 1:01 and the other for 27 seconds, but came up empty both times.

Neither team scored in the third period with both defenses tightening up, as the teams combined for just 14 shots with Maine getting nine of them.

The Falcons fall to 1-3 on the season, but return to the ice Tuesday night when they face Quinnipiac at the TD Bank Sports Center.
