Falcons Fall in Series Opener at Robert Morris 5-2

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Robert Morris jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period, and led throughout as they defeated Bentley University 5-2 Friday night in the opener of a weekend Atlantic Hockey series.

The Colonials led 2-0 just 4:41 into the opening period, as they received goals from Colin South on the power play at 2:11 and Chase Golightly at 4:41.

Bentley though cut into the deficit later in the period as sophomore Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) netted his third of the season on the power play with 5:55 left, assisted by Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) and defenseman Matt Blomquist (Blaine, Minn./Coulee Region Chill), one of two assists on the night for Blomquist.

With Bentley trailing 2-1 entering the second period, the difference the rest of the way proved to be Robert Morris scoring goals early in the second and third periods.

Cody Wydo found the back of the net on the power play just 51 seconds into the second frame to make the score 3-1, stealing away some of the momentum Bentley had from Grieve's goal. But the Falcons fought back, as Gensler scored on the power play at the 11:16 mark to again make it a one-goal deficit at 3-2.

The second period ended that way, but the Colonials scored a back-breaking goal just 1:22 into the third period from Zach Hervato to go up 4-2. The Falcons rest of didn't score the rest of the period, and Adam Brace tacked on a late goal to finish out the scoring.

Robert Morris improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic Hockey with the win, while the Falcons drop to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in Atlantic Hockey. Game two of the series is Saturday night at 7:05 pm.
