Three Goal Third Period Lifts Army Past Bentley

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army scored three goals in the third period to rally from a 1-0 deficit, as the Black Knights bested Bentley University 3-1 Friday night in Atlantic Hockey play at Tate Rink.

Bentley took a 1-0 lead into the third and was looking strong, as senior goalie Joe Calvi (New Lenox, Ill./New England Jr. Huskies) was shutting down the Black Knights, but a shot by senior Cody Omilusik tied the game. Omilusik put the puck on net from the left face-off circle, perhaps intended for a teammate on the far post, but the puck slid under Calvi and found its way into the back of the net, tying the score at 6:22.

Just 1:41 later, Army took the lead with a power play goal from junior Mike Hull, who put the puck home after taking a pass from junior Danny Colvin in front of the net.

The Falcons were given a two-man advantage for 18 seconds with 5:37 left in the game, but nothing came of it. They had a golden opportunity to score on the first power play, when the puck slid across the slot to a wide open Jared Rickord (Skokie, Ill./Springfield Jr. Blues) on the far post, but goalie Jay Clark recovered in time to make a sliding kick save.

A penalty was called on Army's Dax Lauwers with 1:25 remaining in the contest, and Calvi was pulled to give Bentley a 6-on-4 advantage. The Black Knights won the face-off in their own zone, and Hull took the puck out of the zone and slid a shot down the ice from the neutral zone that went into the empty net with 1:18 left to seal the win.

Bentley's goal came at 8:28 of the first period from junior Aaron Stonacek (Basehor, Kan./Fairbanks Ice Dogs).  Freshman Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) skated down the right wing and fed a backhand pass to Stonacek, streaking down the slot untouched. Stonacek then tapped the puck under Clark's glove to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Scoring chances were tough to come by in the second period, but the best chance went to Army early in the period. The Falcons turned the puck over in their own zone, allowing junior Mark Dube to gain control of the puck and have a breakaway. Calvi though was up to the task, denying Dube's wrist shot with a glove save.

The Falcons fall to 5-8-2 overall and 4-5-1 in Atlantic Hockey play with the loss, while Army improves to 5-8-1 and 4-6-1. Bentley is off until Dec. 30, when they start a two-game series at home against Air Force.
