Niagara Rallies Past Bentley for 5-3 Win

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Bentley University let a 3-0 first period lead slip away as Niagara scored four times in the third period to rally past the Falcons for a 5-3 win on Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey play at Dwyer Arena.

The Falcons scored three times in the first period to lead 3-0 after one, and they took that lead deep into the second period until Niagara started to chip away. Junior defenseman Robert Martini made it a 3-1 game with an unassisted goal with 1:32 left in the second.

Bentley kept its two goal advantage through the first 10:33 of the third period, but Niagara netted four goals in the final 9:27.

Senior Paul Zanette made it a one goal game at the 10:33 mark, and senior Brian Haczyk tied it up at 14:42.

With the momentum clearly with the Purple Eagles, junior Sam Goodwin scored the game-winner, his first goal of the season, with 1:32 remaining. Giancarlo Iuorio added an empty-netter with 43 second left.

Bentley started the game off well, as sophomore Brett Hartung (Tallahassee, Fla./Wichita Falls Wildcats) gave them a 1-0 advantage just 1:01 in. Freshman Jared Rickord (Skokie, Ill./Springfield Jr. Blues) had the assist.

The Falcons' top line accounted for the next two goals, scored by seniors Dustin Cloutier (Berkley, Mich./Mahoning Valley Phantoms) and Erik Peterson (Shorewood, Minn./Sioux Falls Stampede). Cloutier's goal came at 8:48 of the period with freshman Brett Gensler (St. Charles, Mo./Youngstown Phantoms) and Peterson assisting. Peterson scored unassisted at 16:46 to make it 3-0.

That third goal chased starting goalie Andrew Hare. Freshman Carsen Chubak came on in relief and made 12 saves the rest of the way for the win.

The Falcons fall to 2-5-1 overall and 1-2 in Atlantic Hockey, while Niagara wins its third straight and goes to 5-3-2 and 4-1.

Bentley is back in action on Friday when they host UConn at 7:05 p.m.
