Bentley’s Rally Comes up Short, Falls to Quinnipiac 3-2 on Opening Night

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Bentley hockey team's third period rally came up just short Friday night, as Quinnipiac pulled out a 3-2 win over the Falcons at the TD Bank Sports Center.

The Falcon offense was silent for more than two-and-a-half periods as they trailed 3-0 late in the third period. However, a goal by junior Aaron Stonacek (Basehor, Kan./Fairbanks Ice Dogs) with 7:24 left got Bentley to within two.

A penalty was called on Quinnipiac after the goal was scored giving Bentley a power play. The Falcons took advantage just 1:41 after Stonacek's goal, making it 3-2 on a Mike Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Olds Grizzlys) slap shot from the point. Junior Trent Bonnett (Butler, Pa./Mahoning Valley Phantoms) and sophomore Dan Koudys (Grimsby, Ontario/Burlington Cougars had the assists.

Bentley pulled goalie Kyle Rank (Islip, N.Y./Markham Waxers) for the final 1:11 for the extra-attacker. Despite getting off a couple of shots, they could not find the tying goal.

Quinnipiac jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:04 into the game on a goal by sophomore Clay Harvey. Harvey took a pass from Yur Bouharevich near the blue line, skated in on net untouched and beat Rank through the five-hole.

Bentley settled down after that and outshot the Bobcats 11-4 the rest of the period but could not covert any of its chances.

The Bobcats extended their lead to 3-0 in the second period with two goals. Freshman Connor Jones made it 2-0 at the 4:29 mark, and sophomore Russell Goodman tacked on a power play goal at 16:17. Rank stopped the initial shot by Jones, but Goodman followed up in front of the net and put home the rebound.

Junior goalie Dan Clarke made 23 saves for Quinnipiac to earn his second win of the season

The Bobcats improve to 2-1 on the season while the Falcons fall to 0-1. Bentley is right back in action tomorrow afternoon in Albany, N.Y., where they will take on Rensselaer at 5:00 p.m.
