Bentley Captures Own Newport Classic; Perkins Uses Career Effort to Earn Medalist Honors

NEWPORT, R.I. – With senior captain John Perkins (Middleton/Philips Andover Acad.) earning medalist honors after posting his best round as a collegian, the Bentley University Falcons captured its own six-team Newport National Classic Tuesday at the Newport National Golf Club.

The Falcons, number six in the East in the latest NCAA Division II rankings,  finished with their best team score of the season, 302, and claimed first place by three strokes over runner-up Babson College and four over  The College of Saint Rose. The tournament victory was Bentley's first since prevailing in the Southern New Hampshire Quechee Classic in September.

That 302 didn't even count Perkins even-par 72 as Falcon coach Mickey Herron didn't have him among his top five.  Perkins played the par-five holes in one-under and did the same on the par fours.

However, he did have junior Cal Meyers (Richfield, Wisc./Slinger HS), who tied for second with a 73, and junior Chris Ehl (Reading/Reading HS), who finished eighth with a 75. Also counting for the Falcons was sophomore Chris Simione (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire HS) with a 76 and junior Jimmy Brunone (Plymouth/Tabor Academy) with a 79.

Meyers led the 42 players in pars with 15 and Simione had a tournament-best five birdies.

Bentley will finish its regular season schedule this weekend in Hamilton, N.Y. at the Robert Trent Jones Individual Shootout, hosted by Colgate University at the Seven Oaks Golf Club.
