Bentley Cruises to Northeast-10 Golf Championship with Full Team Effort

NEW LONDON, N.H. – With all five players placing in the top ten, Bentley University easily captured the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Golf Championships Sunday at the Lake Sunapee Country Club. The Falcons had a significant lead most of the day and finished with a 297-296-593 with their team score the best winning mark in the NE-10 since 2003. In addition, their winning margin of 13 strokes was the largest in a decade.

The championship was Bentley's second in the last four years, their fourth since 2006 and their fifth overall. It automatically qualified Coach Mickey Herron's team for the NCAA Division II East/Atlantic Regional, which will be played in early May.

Leading the way was junior co-captain Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta,  Maine/Lincoln Academy), who shot an even-par 70 during Sunday's action to vault in the standings from 20th and finish the tournament in third place at 77-70-147. He led the 50-player field in pars with 27, including 16 during the second round when he turned in a very consistent performance (one birdie, one bogey).

Senior co-captain Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) and freshman Cal Meyers (Richfield, Wisc./Slinger HS) finished in a tie for fifth at 72-78-150. Both had begun the second round in a tie for second place.

Tying for tenth place were freshman Brett Chatfield (Attleboro/Bishop Feehan HS) and junior Tommy Ayres (Bolton/Nashoba Reg. HS), both with a 151. Chatfield, who eagled the par-five 17th Sunday, carded a 76-73 while Ayres turned in a 78-73 with his second-day score including three birds.

The medalist was Southern New Hampshire's Jake Nutter, who set a tournament record for low score (68-66-134) and finished nine strokes in front of the runner-up, Assumption's Adam Bourque (74-69-143).

In the team standings, Bentley was followed by Le Moyne (301-305-606) and Southern New Hampshire (299-309-608).

Bentley will be back in the Granite State next weekend for the Northeast Challenge at the Concord Country Club.
