Bentley Golf Holds Lead at Midpoint of Northeast-10 Championships

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Bentley University Falcons will take a two-stroke lead into Sunday's final round of the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Championships after a strong showing Saturday at Lake Sunapee Country Club. Second-round action will get underway at 10 am.

With senior Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) and freshman Cal Meyers (Richfield, Wisc./Slinger HS) leading the way, Bentley finished with a 297, with Southern New Hampshire University (299) and Le Moyne College (301) right on its heels.

Bentley's lead was five strokes late in the round, but junior Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) uncharacteristically struggled over the final two holes, closing with a double-bogey and bogey. He still finished with a 77, putting him in a tie for 20th in the 50-player tournament.

Stoddard and Meyers are tied for second at the tournament's midpoint, each shooting a two-over-par 72. Stoddard birdied the third, seventh and 17th holes, and Meyers birdied two par-fives, the sixth and the 17th.

Bentley also had a strong effort from freshman Brett Chatfield (Attleboro/Bishop Feehan HS), who turned in a 76 and finished the day in a tie for 14th.

Southern New Hampshire's Jake Nutter was the only golfer to break par, with his two-under 68 putting him four up on both Stoddard and Meyers.

Bentley will be seeking its first championship since 2011 and the accompanying automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
