SHOREHAM, N.Y. – Low scores were very prevalent during day one of the Dowling September Shootout Sunday at the Tallgrass Golf Club, with Bentley University finishing the day in a tie for fifth place in the 12-team, two-day tournament.

Just six strokes separate the top seven teams, all of whom bettered 300 on the day. Concordia College is the leader at the midpoint following a 292, Le Moyne College is one stroke back and the Bentley Falcons turned in a 298, the team's best day one score of the season.

Senior Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) fired a one-over-par 72 to lead Bentley, leaving him in a tie for seventh as six players shot par or better. Dowling's Petter Lehmann tops the leaderboard at the tourney's midpoint following a three-under 68. Three players, including two from Concordia College (N.Y.), are tied for second, two strokes back.

Juniors Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy), Tommy Ayres (Bolton, Mass./ Nashoba Prep) and Matt Freitag (Cheshire, Mass./Hoosac Valley HS) also played well for Bentley. Oliver's 74 put him in a tie for 17^th, Ayres (75) will resume play in a tie for 26th, and Freitag is tied for 33rd following a 77. A total of 60 players are competing, with 16 opening with a 73 or better.

The tournament resumes at 7 am Monday morning.
