Michel Leads Bentley to Championship of Peter King Memorial

RIVERHEAD, N.Y.  – Led by senior captain and 2012 Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America Matt Michel (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS), the Bentley University golf team captured the 13-team Peter King Memorial, which concluded Saturday at Long Island National Golf Club.

The Falcons posted back-to-back 300's in the tournament, finishing with a 36-hole team score of 600, identical to UMass-Lowell. However, Bentley was declared the team titlist by virtue of a better second-day score by its fifth man. For the tournament, all ten Falcon scores were in the 70's.

It was a key victory for coach Mickey Herron's team, which entered the weekend eighth in this week's NCAA Division II East Region rankings. Lowell was number seven this week, sixth-place Concordia College was fifth in the regional poll and eighth-place Dowling College was sixth.

Michel turned in a one-over 72 Saturday and finished third at 145, two strokes back of medalist Shane Dobesh of Roberts Wesleyan, who won a playoff with UMass-Lowell's Sylvain Debiais.

Bentley's number two man was freshman Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy), who tied for sixth at 75-74-149, with his second round score his best as a collegian.

Also contributing to Bentley's first team title of the year were sophomore Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) (76-75-151), freshman Sal Visali (West Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable HS) (76-79-155) and senior Dan McQueen (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Reg. HS) (78-79-157).

Bentley's next action is the Mike Bello Invitational in Baldwinsville, N.Y. Apr. 14-15.
