Strong Day 1 for Bentley at Peter King Memorial

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – The Bentley University golf team had a strong first day Friday during the Peter King Memorial Tournament at Long Island National and will enter Saturday's final round tied for second place in a field of 13.

All five of coach Mickey Herron's golfers shot 78 or better, giving Bentley a team score of 300, two strokes back of Roberts Wesleyan's tournament-leading 298. Three teams ahead of the number eight Falcons in this week's NCAA Division II East Region rankings trail the Falcons in the tournament, number five Concordia (6th place, 304), number six Dowling (10th place, 320) and number seven UMass-Lowell (3rd place, 302).

Setting the pace for the Falcon was 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Matt Michel (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS), with a 73. That put him in a four-way tie for second, one stroke back of Kyle Harmon of Daemen College.

Bentley freshmen had an outstanding day with Malcolm Oliver (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy) turning in a 75 (tying his collegiate best) and Sal Visali (West Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable HS) right behind him with a 76. Sophomore Jon Stoddard (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury HS) also played well, finishing with a season-best 76.

Saturday's action is scheduled to get underway at 10:30 am.
