The Bentley University Golf Team Spring 2011 Photo Tour

The Quest For An NCAA Tournament Berth

After a long and arduous journey to South Carolina, sleeping 5 to a room in Myrtle Beach, the team warms up in Ocean City for the spring opener at Rum Pointe GC, hosted by Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Thanks to generous alumni and parents, 10 members of the team and your intrepid coach set sail in two vans en route to spring break in Myrtle Beach for four days and then headed up the coast to Maryland where Bentley played well. The Falcons finished 4th out of 11 teams, shooting a 305-309 – 614, showing what can happen when the men get to some serious practice!   Even the second team played well firing a 319-312  -  631, beating three colleges on their own!    Are we deep?

East Meets West: Leominster’s Richie Powers (l) & San Diego’s Grant Alter prior to the first spring event, two of next year’s captains along with Nickie Clarke.   Powers shoots 77-81 while Alter fires 74-80.   Captain Macielak leads team with 77-73 placing him sixth out of 55 golfers!!!!

Classic Pope……………circa 2011….we shall never forget this graceful swing as he “crushes” another with the camel-like Clarkie admiring and wondering…..”Will i ever swing that good?”……

…….but, when we get back to good old New England……it’s still winter!!!!!!!

Yeah, I like this course coach, says Harry Kirkpatrick….aka Boo….by the look of it – Matt Michel, Danny McQueen and Nick Mini do not agree with your enthusiasm for this torture chamber.  Maybe the 30 degree weather and 40 mph winds had something to do with it as Bentley finishes 5th out of 12 teams in the River Hawk Invitational.

The Bentley golf team ritual lives on.  All five must make the same putt consecutively before we go to dinner this day, it took quite a while!!!!!  Pressure putting practice, when you are hungry!

(left to right) Possio, Powers, Michel, Mini, Alter.

(took them a half-hour!!)

Given his overzealous hunger, Harry just wants the boys to finish the deal!!

Maybe now Terrence will believe me when i say get your head over the ball!!!

To all Bentley golf alumni, Alex Macielak & Terrence Tedeschi are in the job market now

Powers & his posse storm Lowell

Can you tell?  Exams are coming up the next five days. Then again, Michel (4.0) and McQueen (3.83) absolutely nail their spring courses…..seriously, do they look like the two smartest on the team?

My Wollaston boys – practice round in mid-April

How great is this team?  Possio, McQueen, Michel, Mini, Clarke, Kirkpatrick, Powers, Alter.

Boo…..”Coach never, ever lets me down when it comes to food”.  This is a normal break on the 11th green of a fancy private course…isn’t it?

You think it is easy playing competitive golf the day after winter?

News flash:  The Bentley University golf team has a home for 2011-12!!!! Pine Brook CC in Weston, the best conditioned golf course in New England!!!!  Finally, a warm day in early may.

Spring in the sweetest place on earth, Hershey, Pa. Bentley makes it to the NCAA Regionals for all of the East/Atlantic Region Division II institutions.

(left to right)  Clarke, Tedeschi, Powers, Macielak (captain), Michel)

Team makes it to Hershey, Pa. for the NCAA Regionals. The food is awesome in the hotel, and Michel orders his favorite……toast……uhhhh, make that burnt toast please!!!!

Is that Don January on the Hershey range?

Matt Michel tied with Richie Powers for the team lead at the NCAAs, firing 77-75-78 under the gun. Powers checks in with 75-75-80 as the final round is played in nasty conditions.

One for One…….We can do better…..And will!!!!

Just 20 Colleges make the East/Atlantic Super Regional  (From 13 States)

Richie Powers…..did that ball actually explode?

Boston to Hershey and back…..Van, plane, van, Hershey Lodge, van, plane, van……Exams!!!!!

So school ends……team has a cumulative 3.4 GPA……Alex, Nick, Terry graduate…..and what does Clarkie do in his first tournament of the summer?  He and his home pro, Tom Tobey -PGA, fire a -10 62 best ball at Cape Cod National, each recording six birdies en route to a whopping 7-shot win!!!

Then, the wiry one placed 3rd in his Mass Publinx Qualifier firing a 71 at Bay Pointe National

Meanwhile, Powers was medalist in his Mass Amateur qualifying round in early June, beating all 70 golfers at Holden Hills and McQueen placed 4th in his qualifier at Vesper. They represented Bentley in our state amateur championship and just missed qualifying for match play

News Flash II:  Bentley received an invite to the prestigious 2011 Nova Southwestern University Shark Shootout, which will be held over columbus day weekend. It will be played at the PGA National Golf Club Champions Course, with the Falcons competng against many of the top D-II college golf programs in the country.

Special thanks to all the golf facilities who graciously hosted our teams’ practices in 2010-11: Sandy Burr, Belmont, Oakley, International, Salem, Wollaston, Pine Brook, Red Tail and Shining Rock.

Extra special thanks to the many alumni who donated $$ &  the parents of this team whose support has been invaluable in our pursuit of reaching the NCAAs.  Thank you all.
