No. 14/17 Bentley Drops 2nd Straight as Pace Uses 2nd-Half Rally to Prevail, 76-66

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – After the Bentley University Falcons opened their biggest lead of the afternoon at 48-44, the Pace University Setters reclaimed control with a 15-2 run and went on to post a 76-66 victory in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Goldstein Fitness Center.

The Setters were powered by six-foot-seven senior forward Peyton Wejnert (Point Pleasant, N.J.), who scored 30 points on 13-of-17 shooting and also has 11 rebounds and a block.

The loss dropped Bentley, which was ranked 14th in Division II this week by the NABC and 17th by D2SIDA, to 14-4 overall and 6-3 NE10, good for a four-way tie for first in the Northeast Division. Meanwhile, Pace improved to 12-6 overall and 4-5 conference.

With Wejnert opening the game's scoring with a three-pointer from the left wing and a six-footer, Pace jumped out to a 5-0 lead and remained in front throughout the opening half. The Setters made five of their first eight three-pointers, including back-to-back triples from freshman forward Christian Adams (New Haven, Conn.) and sophomore guard Chris Matthews (Newton, Mass.), to open a 23-15 lead.

An 8-2 Bentley run, which included five points from sophomore guard Brian Wright-Kinsey (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooks School) forged a 25-all tie, but Wejnert scored six of the half's final eight points to send his team to the locker room up five, 33-28.

The visiting Falcons took a lead three times in the first six minutes of the second, including 44-42 with 14:23 left on a jumper from junior guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon, Mass./Thayer Academy). That was followed by a layup from sophomore guard Mason Webb (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuiness HS)  and Bentley had its biggest lead of the game, 46-42, with 13:51 left.A

Nearly two minutes later, with the shot clock winding down, Pace junior guard Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa.) drained a three to ignite the 15-2 run. Included were a pair of three-balls from junior guard Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y.), both from the left wing.

A second-chance basket from freshman guard Isaac Martin (Peachtree Gardens, Ga./Norcross HS) brought the Falcons within six with 1:08 to play, but Pace locked up the win with a closing 7-3 spurt.

Bentley placed four in double figures with Webb leading the way with 16 points and four rebounds. Senior forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Williston Northampton School) finished with 12 points, six boards and five assists, and both Mello-Klein and Wright-Kinsey scored 11. Mello-Klein also has eight rebounds and four assists.

Wejnert was followed on the Setter scoring list by freshman forward Brian Powell (Middleton, N.Y.), with 14 points and four blocks.

Pace had a slight advantage in most categories, including field goal percentage (.484-.458), rebounds (34-32) and turnovers (6-9).

The Falcons will return to action Wednesday with a home game against Saint Rose.
