Bentley Takes 3-0 Record to Philadelphia for Saturday Matinee against Jefferson

WALTHAM, Mass. – After opening the season with three home wins, the Bentley University men's basketball team will be on the road for the first time this season on Saturday, playing a noon game in Philadelphia against the former Philadelphia University, now known as Jefferson University. A webcast will be available at http://www.philaurams.com/sports/mbkb/livevideo.

Bentley, off to its best start since the 2013-14 team won its first seven, posted a pair of lop-sided non-conference wins before holding off Stonehill, 89-86, in its Northeast-10 opener. The Skyhawks are a team that had given the Falcons difficulty in recent years, winning eight of the previous nine encounters between the two.

Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate) and Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/ Hampden Academy) accounted for more than half of the Falcons' points against Stonehill as the two juniors combined for 52 points. Richmond, a guard, scored a season-best 29 while Gilpin, a forward, established a new career high with 23 points.

Richmond, who had a school record 45 the last time he played on the road (at Adelphi in the NE10 playoffs last February), leads Bentley with a 21.3 average. Gilpin's 23 elevated his season norm to 13.0, tying him for third on the team behind Richmond and sophomore forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Williston Northampton School). Hudson, who averages 14 points and eight rebounds, already has ten offensive rebounds.

Freshman guard Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Acsdemy), who already has an NE10 Rookie of the Week award to his credit, put up a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double against Stonehill while playing turnover-free for the third straight game. He's averaging 13 points, eight rebounds and 4.7 assists with a sparkling .696 field goal percentage.

Senior forward Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS), with averages of seven points and four rebounds, rounds out the usual starting five for coach Jay Lawson while freshman guard Colton Lawrence (Myerstown, Pa./ELCO HS) has been the top scorer off the bench so far. He's averaged 10.3 points on 50 percent shooting.st recent

Legendary Jefferson coach Herb Magee, a 2011 inductee into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, is in his 51st season at the helm with his 1,055 wins second most in NCAA history, trailing only Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.

Only one of those wins has come against Bentley, that happening back in February 1980 in the Falcons' only previous visit to the Jefferson campus. Bentley has won the other three matchups, the most recent in Waltham to start the 2014-15 season.

The Rams, who'll be playing their home opener, will be attempting to halt a four-game losing streak that has dropped the team to 2-4. Included were a pair of five-point losses to NE10 teams, American International and Merrimack.

Freshman Alexander Gorton leads Jefferson in scoring (17.0) with senior Kaison Randolph (13.2) and sophomore Kylan Guerra (12.3). Combined, the three guards have played all but two minutes in the first six games.

Jefferson, as a team, has held its opponents to a .414 field goal percentage and less than six three-pointers per game.

Bentley will also be on the road Tuesday, a 7:30 pm Northeast-10 contest at Assumption College.
