Bentley Hosts Stonehill Wednesday, Looking to Complete 3-0 Opening Homestand

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University men's basketball team will look to make it a 3-0 season-opening homestand when the Falcons host Stonehll College Wednesday night in the team's Northeast-10 Conference opener. Tip-off at the Dana Center is scheduled for 7:30 pm with a free webcast available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv.

Bentley pounded two teams from the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference over the weekend in its Tip-Off Classic, 103-64 over Georgian Court and 112-65 over Concordia. The latter was the more surprising of the two scores as it came just a day after the Clippers had upended Saint Anselm College, 103-92.

Coach Jay Lawson's club shot .549 overall for the weekend while also connecting at a 41 percent from three-point land. The Falcons had a +23.0 rebound margin in the two games and also enjoyed a 52-19 advantage in free throw attempts.

Four Falcons averaged in doubles in the point column during the tournament, a list headed by sophomore forward Chris Hudson (Hodgdon, Maine/Williston Northampton School) and All-Conference junior guard Ryan Richmond (Toronto, Ont./Thomson Collegiate).

Hudson established a new career best with 25 points against Concordia and finished the weekend with a 19.5 scoring norm. He also averaged eight rebounds and made 16 of his 22 shot attempts. Richmond followed with averages of 17.5 points, five rebounds and 4.5 assists.

Freshman guards Colton Lawrence (Myerstown, Pa./ECHO HS) and Jordan Mello-Klein (Sharon/Thayer Academy) were the other two. Lawrence came off the bench to shoot 56 percent while averaging 14 points and five boards. Mello-Klein, recognized as the NE10 Rookie of the Week, provided 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists a game while shooting 67 percent and not committing a turnover.

As indicted by a 107.5 point-per-game average, Bentley received scoring from a number of people in addition to those four. Junior forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) and sophomore guard Seth Stankiewicz (Reading, Pa./The Hill School) scored eight a game, senior Brandon Wheeler (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic HS) and freshman forward Pete Blust (Hinsdale, Ill./ Hinsdale Catholic HS) followed at 7.0, and junior forward Kyle Bouchard (Houlton, Maine/Houlton HS) provided 6.5 per.

Stonehill will come into the Dana looking for its first win of the new year after a pair of losses in its own Tip-Off Classic. Following a 15-12 season a year ago, the Skyhawks fell in overtime to Dominican (N.Y.), 86-83, and dropped a 91-86 decision to Bloomfield.

Stonehill graduated leading scorer Ryan Logan, but returns a trio who scored in doubles last winter in sophomore forward Daniel Largey (12.3) and senior guards Isaiah Bess and KJ Lee, both of whom averaged 11.9 a game.

During the opening weekend, sophomore guard Will Moreton was the Skyhawks' top scorer at 17.0, and Lee followed at 16.5. Lee had a strong shooting performance, making 14 of 22 in the two games.

Stonehill also received 13.5 points apiece from Largey and Bess.

Both meetings last year were nailbiters with Stonehill claiming both, 82-80 and 108-101 with the latter decided in overtime.

After meeting up with Stonehill, Bentley will play its next two on the road, Saturday in Philadelphia against Jefferson (formerly Philadelphia University) and Tuesday at Assumption.
