PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Bentley University senior Academic All-America® Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/Camden Hills HS) became the program's all-time leading scorer, but saw his tremendous career come to a disappointing end as the Falcons dropped a 78-62 decision to Stonehill College in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball East Regional Saturday night at Holy Family University's Campus Center.

McFarland, who amassed 21 points and nine rebounds while playing nearly the entire 40 minutes, tied the mark owned by Bill Holden (2,103) with a lay-up with 10:58 left in the first half and broke it with another inside basket about 18 seconds later. He finished his career with 2,118 points and also number one in school history in field goals and average minutes played.

Shooting proved to be the difference in this one as the Skyhawks took down the Falcons for the third time in four meetings this season. They shot 51.8 percent overall, including 20 of 33 inside the three-point line, while limiting the Falcons to .382 and 8 of 25 from downtown.

The first half saw six lead changes and four ties, the last coming with 7:22 left until the break when six-foot eight senior Pierce Cumpstone (Bainbridge Township, Ohio) broke a 28-all draw with a jumper in the paint.

On top 39-34 at the break, Stonehill used a run of 15 unanswered early in the second half to open an 18-point advantage, 56-38, with 13 minutes to play. Included in the spurt was five points by senior guard Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio) and four from Cumpstone. In the meantime, the Falcons came up empty on ten straight possessions (0-8, two turnovers).

Bentley answered right back with 13 straight points, including threes by McFarland and Academic All-America® grad student Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS), and all of a sudden it was a 56-50 game with 8:58 left. Bentley eventually got to within three, 60-57, after senior guard Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) drained a three with 5:32 left.

Stonehill responded with three-pointers by sophomore guard Isaiah Bess (LaGrange,, Maine) and Cumpstone (his second and third of the game) to return the differential to 12, 69-57 with three minutes left. McFarland answered with his final career basket, a three-pointer, but the next six points went up on the Skyhawk side of the scoreboard, making it 75-60 with 40 seconds left.

Cumpstone led five double-digit scorers for Stonehill with 19 points as he was 7 of 11 overall, including three of five from downtown. Smith followed with 15 and junior forward Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio) had 12.

Furness netted 13 points for Bentley and Hyland closed out his career with 11 points and eight assists.

Bentley enjoyed a 21-6 advantage in points off turnovers, but were outrebounded 38-32 and made only two of five free throws.

McFarland, Hyland and Furness, one of the most prolific scoring trios in Bentley history, finished their careers with a combined total of 4,565 points.
