Hyland, Furness & McFarland Score in 20’s as Bentley Improves to 6-0 in Northeast-10

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate student Keegan Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) posted a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double and seniors Tyler McFarland (Rockport, Maine/ Camden Hills HS) and Alex Furness (Wells, Maine/Wells HS) each followed with 21 as Bentley University stayed unbeaten in Northeast-10 Conference play with a 76-52 men's basketball victory over St. Michael's College Saturday afternoon at the Ross Sports Center.

It marked the third time in the last six games that the trio have all scored at least 20. Combined, they accounted for 66 of the Falcons' 76 points and also had 26 rebounds and ten assists.

With the win, Bentley will head into a 17-day exam and holiday break at 8-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference. St.Michael's lost for the eighth time in nine games this season and remained winless in the NE-10 (0-6).

Bentley took the lead for good with an 11-3 run, fueled by a rare four-point play by freshman forward Zach Gilpin (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) on his first career shot from distance, midway through the first half. The spurt, which made it 23-16, also included two free throws by McFarland, a Hyland triple from the top of the key and a pair of free throws by freshman forward Kyle Bouchard (Houlton, Maine/Houlton HS).

McFarland's two free throws gave him sole possession of fifth place on Bentley's all-time scoring list. He finished the game with 1,688 after moving ahead of former All-Americas Al Grenfell '75 and Todd Orlando '84.

A couple minutes later, Hyland and McFarland teamed up for a 9-0 run that made it a 32-21 game late in the first half. Hyland had five of the nine and McFarland tallied the other four.

Bentley extended its lead to 16 (48-32) with 15 minutes to play on the strength of a 13-4 run that included two McFarland triples and one by Hyland.

Furness buried a couple from outside the arc and scored a total of eight during a 18-2 blitz that made it a 30-point game, 70-40, with 6:15 remaining.

Hyland, who had seven of his ten rebounds by intermission, shot 9 of 16 from the floor with three triples. Furness' 8-of-11 shooting included five three- pointers and he also provided eight rebounds. McFarland uncharacteristically struggled with his shot (8-19, 3-11 3's) but accumulated eight rebounds and a career-high six assists in addition to posting his eighth 20-point game of the campaign.

Senior guard Greg Grippo (Edison, N.J.) led St. Michael's with 16 points and junior forward Matt Bonds (Accokeek, Md.) had a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Purple Knights.

Bentley outshot St. Michael's 43-35 percent, made seven more threes (12-5) and had a 10-point advantage at the line (12-14 as compared to 2-6). The Falcons were a plus-five on the boards (41-36) and also in second-chance points (16-11), and also committed only nine turns, two fewer than the Purple Knights.

Bentley doesn't return to action until Dec. 30 when the Falcons will host Molloy College.
